Ms. Alvick's 6th grade ELA & The Watsons Go to Birmingham

As a part of their study of plot and plot structure, students started by tagging the first chapter with hashtags about the book's exposition, including #character, #settingTime, #settingPlace, and #genre. The goal of annotating text is to increase engagement of readers and improve skill with independent reading strategies. By annotating text together, students can see connections and thoughts that other students have as they read, and track character growth and plot development as the story progresses. Students who wanted a challenge have also started tagging the text for figurative language (#figurativeLang) and identifying elements of fiction.
