They learned that cities grow outward, and they expand from the urban core to the urban fringe to the rural fringe.  Students took on various roles of city planners as they visited three metropolitan areas in the United States and Canada (Portland, Toronto, and Atlanta) -- learning specifically about how those areas are trying to deal with growth.
