6th grade Advanced Math has been exploring Geometry.

Students have been learning about angle relationships and how to find area and circumference of circles, areas of triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids and composite figures. In addition, they took the Winter Map and reflected on their areas of strengths and possible weaknesses, using this data, to set goals to accomplish before the end of the year.

For Black History month, students at Westwood Middle School learned about American artist Kara Walker

For Black History month, students at Westwood Middle School learned about American artist Kara Walker. Walker’s iconic silhouette work focuses on the history of slavery and the present issue of racism in our culture. Although an intense subject, it was a good way to get students thinking about the importance of this month and the sometimes controversial nature of art. When designing their own silhouette art, students had to consider a social issue that needs to be addressed. The topics they chose were profound. From phone addiction to alcohol abuse, the students really dug deep. Working in small groups, students created silhouettes scenes that prompted thinking about deeply rooted societal issues.
