The Students in the Foods Class is Cooking Away!

This is our first week officially cooking in Foods class! Students did a great job preparing and passing their mock food-handlers test last week which proved they are ready to begin cooking and baking! The first recipe was spaghetti- student learned that adding salt to water before you boil it will lower the boiling point and adding brown sugar to the tomato sauce brings down the acidic level of tomatoes, giving the sauce a sweeter taste. Students had the choice of adding olives, onions, or Parmesan cheese to their spaghetti. Students are excited for the recipes and keep wanting to add more! Only if we had more time in a day for cooking class! Pictured are students showing off their spaghetti and their cooking and cleaning skills!

Hornstein's Math Extension Class Hard at Work!

During Math Extension class in Mrs. Hornstein's students engage in activities in groups to compliment what is being taught in their regular math class. Each rotation cycle of activities includes review activities, extra practice, and hands on opportunities to work with concepts critical for success in current and future math experiences. Working in groups allows students to practice collaboration and problem solving skills while thinking critically on their own to address the tasks at hand.
