Mrs. Tomsha’s scientists at Westwood Middle School have been busy this year! Students in the 6th grade have learned all about atoms, elements, matter, and chemical reactions. Students put their knowledge to use, participating in engineering compound molecules and mixing chemicals to explore exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions. Seventh grade students recently finished an important unit on cells, the basic unit of structure and function of life. Through this unit, students worked with microscopes to examine plant and animal cells to identify the parts of cells and the cell processes. The knowledge 7th graders gained from this unit has led them into our Genetics unit where students explore dominant and recessive traits and DNA mutations. It has been another exciting year using our inquiry and engineering skills in science!
